Jacques Selosse, Substance - Champagne Brut
Pays: France, Champagne
Style: Brut
Cépage: Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier, Chardonnay
Dosage: (2.5mg/l)
Appellation: Appellation d’Origine Contrôlée Champagne
Average wine-searcher score: 96/100
Dried herbs, flowers, anise, hard candy, dried pears and apricots are some of the many notes that emerge from the NV Brut Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru Substance. Deep, sensual and totally beguiling, the Substance impresses for its sheer personality and richness. With time in the glass attractive streaks of tar, smoke and incense flesh out, giving the wine considerable muscle and a sense of pure gravitas that is utterly compelling. There is a level of richness and breadth that makes it hard to believe Substance is 100% Chardonnay, but much of that comes from the Solera method that incorporates vintages back to 1986. Substance is always one of the more eccentric wines in the range, but it's pure magic. (Robert Parker)
The Champagne House Jacques Selosse is located in the village of Avize, on the Côte des Blancs de Champagne. The family estate comprises almost 8 hectares of vineyards in the crus of Avize, Cramant, Oger, Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, Ay, Mareuil-sur-Aÿ and Ambonnay. The estate was founded in the 1950s by Jacques Selosse, who at the time sold a large part of his grapes to Champagne Lanson, and he made his first wine in 1964. Ten years later, Anselme Selosse, his son, took over the estate. Anselme distanced himself from the biodynamic doctrine and challenged the usual codes and processes. The thoughts and reflections of Masanobu Fukuoa (a Japanese farmer) and permaculture began to inspire him, and subsequently his attention to vines and wine. Over the past twenty years, the Selosse family has developed its own system of viticulture, an approach that does not follow a fixed method, but constantly adapts to the conditions that occur in the different plots of the vineyard during the growing season.
Since 2012, Anselme Selosse has been preparing his son Guillaume to follow in his footsteps. During the time he has worked alongside his father, he has naturally developed his own skills and wine-growing inclinations, which will certainly give a unique identity to future cuvées.
